Quercus alba?

If I had to guess the name of this tree to save my life, I’d say “White Oak” - and then they would probably lead me to the gallows…

At any rate, there were no oaks on the property when I arrived here in 2003, but over the past 9 years I have transplanted and pampered those that have appeared out of nowhere, growing in the most unusual and impossible spots - between bricks, right next to trunks of other trees… Just this week I moved a yearling to a new, open area where, if he wants to, he could easily grow 100 feet tall over the next two centuries and not block the views of the castle from the front gates.

I hardly ever plant enormous trees that will outlive me or make a huge impact on the future of the garden for fear that I might be putting the wrong tree in the wrong place, but it was exciting to move and water a tiny tree that thanks to me just might be here for hundreds of years. Maybe I’ll do it again some time. Makes transplanting silly little annuals a bit boring, I’ll tell you!
