Rosa ‘Letizia’ of the Past, Present and Future - For Jose Marini, who gave me this rose bush early this spring because it refused to flower at her house. And soon we’ll have to move Letizia again, poor thing.

Lathyrus odoratus
This big bucket of sweetpeas is just under the castle tower, which, after the earthquakes, could tumble down any minute, so it gets sprayed a bit brutally from a distance, and not weeded anymore!
Magnolia grandiflora
You, gorgeous you! I will really miss your heavenly scent in June, but not raking up all of your fallen leaves in May!
White Poppy, Galeazza Garden
So temporarily I don’t have a home or the possibility of having you come over for a concert or a reading (or weeding) retreat, but I do still have white poppies, and seeds are easily gathered and moved to wherever we go next.
The beauty of this time of year is helping me through this post-earthquake move out of the castle… It could have happened in winter. I’m so glad it didn’t…
White Poppy, Galeazza Garden, Italy
Rosa ‘Bobby James’
This becomes a whopping big rambler in no time… grows up to 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide. At the moment it’s about 3x3, standing inside the castle gates, to the left as you enter…
Dianthus ‘Mrs. Sinkins’
This is an old-fashioned pink with a wonderful, strong scent. A woman from Crevalcore gave it to me in March, so this is its first year blooming here. I hope it will come back next year.
Rosa ‘Blanche Moreau’
Still growing in a big old iron pot I found alongside the road a few years ago…
Convallaria majalis; Lily-of-the-valley
These were growing under huge clumps of stinging nettles and other weeds, so I picked them and brought htem indoors for a better (less prickly) photo…
Dryopteris affinis ‘Cristata the King’
I don’t know if I’ve ever met a fern that I didn’t like, but this is certainly one that I do… It’s coming back beautifully after its first winter here, and it looks especially cheery with that Galium odoratum (Sweet woodruff) growing under it…
I love our little fern area, especially the Japanese stuff I’ve planted here.
Iberis sempervirens - Candytuft
This is one of many flowers that I associate with my visit to the gardens of the Alhambra and Generalife in 2006. Oh, how I’d love to go back there again…
Dicentra spectabilis
Dicentra spectabilis
Amelanchier canadensis
I brought this bush back from the UK a couple years ago and it is finally flowering… maybe we’ll also see a few fruits?
