From “Tree” to Bush…

Cercis siliquastrum - I’ve just read in a brochure from the Botanical Gardens of Amsterdam that a  true tree has a single trunk, while bushes have multiple trunks… so this “tree” could be grown as a tree, but because it looked a bit like an upside-down broom stuck in the ground when I first planted it, (and after a few years hadn’t grown out of its ugly shape) I chopped it off almost to the ground and it grew back with multiple trunks. I then started weighing down the branches with stones to open it up like a fan. It’s one of my favourite trees in the garden, mostly because it was a gift from a friend, Corrado Gianferrari, but also because I’ve dedicated so much time to shaping it “just so”… These trees aren’t that rare or special in this part of Italy, but I do think ours is one of the most attractive specimens I know, just for its fine form!

If this is what Americans call “Red Bud” I’d like to know what they had against the word “Pink”…
